Oz park stalled yet again

MARCH 16, 2001

A proposal to build a Wizard of Oz theme park in Kansas was delayed yet again with a 2-2 split vote by Johnson County commissioners on Thursday.

The $860 million park would be built on the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. The federal government first needs to be transfer the land to Kansas, who then will transfer it to Oz Entertainment Co., the company which wants to build the park.

Facing a July 1 deadline to make a final decision on the issue, the County voted 3-1 to ask the state for an extension.

A group called Taxpayers Opposed To Oz (TOTO) has filed a lawsuit challenging the transfer of the land.
