EDITORIAL: Make Pequot meeting public

MARCH 6, 2001

Saying it has a duty to "battle secrecy in government," The New London Day in an editorial today says the planned meeting between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the leaders of three Connecticut towns should be made public.

The paper says the public needs to trust both the town leaders and the tribe so it should be made public. The paper says a previous meeting which was closed failed and resulted in a loss of trust.

The towns want the meeting open to the public, but some say public talks could hinder discussion. The tribe has so far expressed no position on the issue although the council this week may vote not to attend the meeting.
