Oriental v. Squaw: Which is Offensive?
APRIL 11, 2001

Washington lawmakers are considering a proposal to strike the term "Oriental" from all state statutes referring to Asians and Asian-Americans.

Asian-Americans who want the term stricken say the term is offensive and a racial slur. Although the term was used to describe Asia and Asians geographically, they say it has roots in cultural imperialism.

Some lawmakers say they never knew "Oriental" is considered offensive. Others say they are confused because the word is used in several different contexts.
