Student wants new state dessert

APRIL 2, 2001 Amber L. Hairy Shirt, an eighth-grade student in South Dakota and a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, wants the state to choose a new official dessert. In a letter to The Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Hairy Shirt says the Legislature was wrong to choose kuchen as the official state dessert. Kuchen is a pastry originating from Germany. Hairy Shirt instead says the state's dessert should be a Native cuisine. She says wojapi, a dessert made out of berries and often eaten with fry bread, should be chosen to reflect the state's Native culture. Get the Hairy Shirt's Letter:
