A forum held by three Connecticut towns over federal recognition and land claims issues of area Pequot tribes quickly turned into a debate between tribal members and town residents.

"What I here and see going on in this room is nothing more than hate crimes against Native Americans." -- Joanne Dark Eyes, Mashantucket Pequot.

"I believe this is, by all definitions of the word, a war, and we are losing it badly." -- David Myer of North Stonington.

"You can’t say we don’t exist just because it doesn’t support your position." -- Ronald Jackson, Easten Pequot.

"I am fed up with having to prove who I am." -- George Eleazer, Mashantucket.

"The federal government has established special privileges...That's the only reason you have to prove who you are." -- North Stonington First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane and moderator of the forum.

An estimated 300 people attended the forum.
