Some interesting letters about the Pequot controversy, including one from the ex-wife of former Mashantucket Chairman Skip Hayward, plus two more book reviews. Of course, we were the first...

BOOK REVIEWS:
"Jeff Benedict’s Without Reservation is an heroic expose of the Mashantucket’s lack of genealogy. If a fraud has been committed, everyone who supports law and order must find it unacceptable to continue. Just as any thief must return the goods, so must the tribe, if what Benedict says is true. And his findings and conclusion on Mashantucket genealogy and recognition are accurate."
Senator Lieberman shouldn't escape blame for his role (Larry Greene. Book Review. The New London Day 5/21)

"The weapons for attacking Native Americans have become more sophisticated, but no less dangerous, through the centuries. Historically, disease, starvation or wars were the most successful strategies for decimating the Native populations of New England. Today, attacks on contemporary Native people are launched in political or legal terms but are no less strategic, and the motivation for these attacks largely remains the same. "
What Makes a Nation? (Katherine Spilde. Book Review. The New London Day 5/21)

LETTERS:
"As long as women remain silent out of fear and shame, people will continue to think of domestic violence as a 'personal issue,' and not the dangerous and serious problem it really is. Finally speaking openly about the person who caused it is not 'character assassination,' but the plain and simple truth."
Benedict's book gave battered wife a voice for the first time (Aline Champoux. Letter to the Editor. The New London Day 5/21)

"[T]he integrity of both our federal and state governments has been subverted by brazen opportunists who fraudulently parlayed the ignorance of our government officials and our collective guilt for mistreatment of Indians into their personal multi-billion-dollar gambling bonanza..."
Possible fraud should be investigated (David L. Hemond. Letters to the Editor. The New London Day. 5/21)

"Without Reservation...reveals how...a group of sham masters formed a corporation with the help of Congress. They called themselves a sovereign nation, using the historical name of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation as a cover. I and other true descendants of this tribe are in an uproar. Anyone interested in locating the 'authentic Pequots,' please feel free to contact me..."
Authentic Pequots overlooked (Mary-Yvette Allen. Letters to the Editor. The New London Day. 5/21)

"I am thankful for all the unselfish and altruistic actions the Mashantucket Pequots have taken for their employees, the state and the country."
Mashantuckets saved economy (Kathy Kulakowski. Letters to the Editor. The New London Day. 5/21)

"I would like to see a copy of all the names on the list the Mashantuckets used to be recognized. My family’s name was used for their list as our grandmother was full-blooded Passamaquoddy Indian."
Hold Congress accountable (Randolph Grimes. Letters to the Editor. The New London Day. 5/21)

"Three hundred years ago, the Great White Father lied to his little Indian brother, stole his land, killed off his buffalo and built one of the grandest countries in the universe."
Little brother got his own back (Albert A. Garvin. Letters to the Editor. The New London Day. 5/21)
