MAY 30, 2000

Scholars and Native Americans like Tom Giago, publisher of the Lakota Nation Journal, have been documenting racism by L. Frank Baum, writer of The Wizard of Oz for more than 10 years. Two editorials written by the author and published in his own newspaper, the Saturday Pioneer, in the 1890s call for "annihilation" of the remaining population of Indians in the Dakotas.
