A man accused of killing a couple in Pennsylvania had participated in protests over a area sacred to the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota. Kenneth Crawford showed up at the protests over Highway 55 in Minneapolis, Minnesota last year but protesters found his words violent and asked him to leave soon after.

Although Crawford was arrested during the protests, authorities hadn't connected him with the Pennsylvania killings till February of this year.

Members of the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota began their protest in 1998 to save four trees in the path of the highway. A federal judge threw out their lawsuit that sought to block construction of the highway in March of this year. The group had wanted a reroute of the highway in order to protect the site.

Construction on the Highway 55 project will restart again this summer and is expected to finish in the summer of 2001.
