JUNE 13, 2000

The Mille Lacs, White Earth, Fond du Lac, Leech Lake, Grand Portage, and Boise Fort Ojibwe bands all hold elections today in Minnesota. Of the group, the Mille Lacs and the White Earth are the most contentious.

Incumbent Mille Lacs chair Marge Anderson faces a tight race with Melanie Benjamin. Key issues center on casino profits and goverment accountability.

White Earth elections are always interesting. Longtime chair, the controversial Darrell "Chip" Wadena, was ousted by John Buckanaga. Rev. Doyle Turner, who had also challenged Wadena, is up against Buckanaga.

Chip was the subject of an HBO movie "Super Chief" that documented the election at White Earth which resulted in Buckanaga's election.
