JUNE 14, 2000

Maria Cantwell, Democratic candidate for the US Senate has been using the Internet to poke fun at Senator Slade Gorton (R Wash) over his environmental record.

Last week, her web site linked to an image of Gorton and "Buster the Salmon" on his own web site. When Gorton's webmasters changed the image on Sunday to read "Slade Gorton works for you," she responded by placing a "Dump Slade 2000" image on her site.

Gorton has accused her of high tech espionage. Cantwell has used the incident to show that Gorton lacks techical knowledge. In a press release issued by the Cantwell office, Mike Slade, former CEO of Starwave, an internet company, said "Apparently, Slade Gorton does not understand the Internet,"
