Narragansett Chief: Let public speak
JUNE 14, 2000

Matthew Thomas, chief sachem of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island, published an editorial in The Providence Journal today. He responds to statements made by the editors of the newspaper in a June 6 editorial and those made by Governor Almond in a June 9 column, saying casino detractors are attacking the tribe.

The tribe has recently offered more money to the state. Voters must ultimately approve the proposal. A telephone poll indicates the majority of voters want to see the issue on the November referendum but it must be placed there by the House Finance Committee.

Thomas argues that the casino represents the "most viable and beneficial" proposal ever put before the state.

Five communities turned down the tribe's previous proposal in 1995.

For the record, the Journal states the editorial board does not oppose the tribe, but gaming.
