JUNE 19, 2000

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut held a special joint birthday party on Sunday for two sisters, Gladys and Ruth Tantaquidgeon. Gladys turned 101 last week Thursday; Ruth will turn 91 on Wednesday.

Gladys is one of the founders of the Tantaquidgeon Museum, the oldest Indian run museum in the country.

The Tantaquidgeon family's collection of tribal documents are credited with helping the tribe receive federal recognition in 1994. Most of the tribe's current membership are descended from the family.
