JUNE 26, 2000 Danny Merrival, a resident of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, said the shootout on June 26, 1975 affected an entire generation of Indian people. The incident also affected local residents, the American Indian Movement (AIM), and the US government. Many voiced different opinions about the 25th annivesary. Governor Bill Janklow, then South Dakota's Attorney General and one of the first to report on the shootout, would not comment on the day. Calvin Jumping Bull, whose family owns the ranch on which the shootout took place, says there are still lingering spirits of the three killed on the day. A healing ceremony will be held today for the three killed and a press conference will take place at the ranch. Get the Story:
