JUNE 27, 2000

Pomp, the son of Sacagawea, was honored this past weekend during a rededication of his grave in eastern Oregon. Descendants of Sacagawea, scholars of the Corp of Discovery, and local ranching families attended the event, which was organized under the auspices of the Oregon Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.

Jean Baptiste Charbonneau was born in 1805 and traveled on his mother's back as she joined Lewis and Clark on their expedition of the west, helping guide and translate for the pair. Pomp traveled throughout the world and was mayor and judge for the San Luis Rey Mission in California.
