JUNE 9, 2000

A proposal that would award Congressional Gold Medals to the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers was approved by the Senate. The proposal also would award Congressional Silver Medals to the more than 500 Code Talkers who followed in their place.

According to the Navajo Nation, only one of the 29 original Code Talkers is still living. The medals would go to the family for the others.

The proposal is part of the fiscal year 2001 Defense Authorization Bill.
