JULY 12, 2000 Winona LaDuke, Ralph Nader's running mate for the Green Party, can credit some of her activism to growing up in Ashland, Oregon. Her mother, Betty LaDuke, is an artist and a professor emeritus at Southern Oregon University. Her late father, Vincent LaDuke, was a writer. In high school, LaDuke was one of few persons of color. She joined the debate team and found her place there. Despite advice to the contrary, she applied to Ivy League schools, eventually choosing Harvard University. The rest, as they say, is history.
