FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2001

Native Americans and local artists on Thursday dedicated a sculpture to Bernie Whitebear, the late leader who founded the Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Seattle, Washington.

The sculpture is called "The Salmon Offering" and depicts a traditional salmon-drying rack. Its purpose is to draw attention to the threatened chinook salmon.

Whitebear died of colon cancer last year.
