New York Times travel writer Erika Dilday recounts her experiences volunteering on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, a trip she says taught her a valuable lesson about life.

Dilday was a volunteer in the Global Citizens Network, a St. Paul, Minnesota organization. She and five others helped do odd jobs at a YMCA on the reservation.

In meeting tribal members and elders, Dilday said she learned how to accept what life brings and to accept changes without denying one's own identity.
