Katie Henio, a 73-year-old Navajo sheepherder, has been chosen by the Rural Community Assistance Corporation to receive the group's volunteer of the year award.

Henio, who lives on the Ramah Reservation in New Mexico, is being honored for her work as president of the Ramah Navajo Weavers Cooperative. The group helps keep Navajo weaving culture alive.

Henio also helps develope Navajo language and culture curriculum for a local school. She only speaks Navajo.

The award ceremony is being held on the reservation this Thursday instead of in California, where the Rural Community Assistance Corporation is based.
