McCain falls out of favor

JULY 24, 2000

After raising nationwide speculation and hopes, Arizona Senator John McCain fell out of favor over the weekend as a top choice for Texas Governor George W Bush's running mate.

Rising to the top, instead, was former Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney. Cheney has reportedly made several comments indicating his front-running position and changed his voter registration from Texas to Wyoming over the weekend.

Cheney's switch is seen as a means of covering the bases, should a constitutional question rise out of both the president and vice-president hailing from the same state.

The choice of McCain could be seen as a positive for voters in Indian Country. McCain is considered by many to be friendly to tribes and sovereignty, having been an active participant in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, in which he served as Chairman.

Before withdrawing from the Republican race, McCain also actively campaigned in Indian Country.
