JULY 6, 2000

An editorial published today in The Billings Gazette says the recent inaguration of the new Crow tribal council is important to the state of Montana. The paper cites the presence of politicans like Senator Max Baucus and gubernatorial candidate Mark O’Keefe as part of its reasoning and says the state and the tribe must exist in an "atmosphere of trust and respect."

The editorial also criticizes the Washington State Republican Party for passing a resolution calling for the abolishment of tribal governments. The paper says that resolution, written by John Fleming, is "low down and high smelling." The paper calls on the national party not to follow suit with the state.
