AUGUST 7, 2000

Vice-President Al Gore has chosen Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

Lieberman is a two-term Senator, first elected in 1988. He is 52 years old.

Lierberman represents what many consider a ground-breaking choice in running mates, since Lieberman is an Orthodox Jew and not well-known nationally.

Lieberman himself has wondered if the country is ready for a Jewish VP. But Democratic National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson over the weekend said Lieberman would be a "slam dunk" even were he not Jewish.

Lieberman is a moderate Democrat. He was the first Senator to criticize President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

The Democratic National Convention takes place next week, August 14-17, in Los Angeles, California.
