Squaws to become mooses
SEPTEMBER 22, 2000

To comply with a Maine law requiring communities to change public place names, Piscataquis County Commissioners have voted to replace all "squaw" place names with "moose."

According to one commissioner, however, the public doesn't want the names changed. When asked for suggestions, he said residents came up with alternative names virtually indistinguishable in prononciation from "squaw."

A special Governor's committee has to approve all name changes before they become final.
