SEPTEMBER 28, 2000 Attorney General Janet Reno said there will not be a task force assigned to look at problems faced by Native Americans in the justice system of South Dakota. However, her decision was met with general approval in the state, said The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Reno wrote 28-page response to a March report about the racial disparities Indian residents say exist in the state. She responded one by one to each of the report's recommendations, saying funding is necessary to enhance tribal justice programs. The ABC News show 20/20 featured a story last week about racism in the state. Whites and Native Americans views of racism varied widely all over the state, said the show.
