In an editorial today, The New York Times says Gov. George Pataki "took advantage" of residents in the wake of September 11's terrorist attacks by pushing through a legislative package for six new Indian casinos in the state.

"Mr. Pataki and the Legislature should bail out of this package before it's too late," the paper writes.

The paper goes on to say the Department of Interior should not take into trust any land for the proposed operations. The paper says any acquisition would involve "intricate land swaps to give the Indians title to land that is nowhere near their historic reservations."

The paper does not say that of the six proposals, two would be on the Seneca Reservation in upstate New York. The paper does not say a third would be located in the tribe's aboriginal territory.

Of the remainder, the paper does not point out that the tribes looking at casinos in the Catskills once owned all of the state before the land in many instances was transferred illegaly to New York. The paper does not say that one tribe who is interested, the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Tribe, lived in the area before being forcibly removed to Wisconsin by the federal government.
