FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2001 In an editorial today, The New London Day calls on three Connecticut towns to drop their land-into-trust lawsuit and return to talks with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The paper says going back to court to fight over 165 acres of land is "exorbitant and useless." The towns of North Stonington and Ledyard are "deceiving themselves" if they think Congress will help out, the paper says, adding that these two towns have "foolishly" walked away from discussions. The paper says the Pequot Tribe has made significant concessions regarding its trust lands, including limiting applications to 880 acres over the next 30 years, and that two towns should join their neighbor Preston in "open" talks.
