Tom Dostou, a Wabanaki elder from Massachusetts, is on a cross-country journey for peace.

Dostou came up with the idea and, along with a group including a Buddhist nun from Japan and a 15-year-old girl from Hawaii, began the trip January 15 at the grave of Chief Seattle in Washington. They are carrying a torch known as the Hiroshima Flame because it was kindled from embers of the atomic bomb dropped there 57 years ago.

The trip will take five months and will cross the entire United States. The group will end up at the United Nations in New York.

Yesterday, they passed through San Francisco. American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks joined them for part of the walk.
