TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 2002 In an editorial today, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader criticizes law enforcement authorities for subjecting a Dakota teenager to "appalling conditions." "Officials said she was housed where she was, because there was no place else to put her," writes the paper. "We think a better explanation is they didn't try hard enough." Adelia Godfrey, a 17-year-old member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribe of South Dakota, was recently transferred to a youth facility after public outcry was raised. The paper says she never should have been kept alone in a basement jail cell called a "dungeon" because she is a known suicide risk. Get the Story:
