Editorial: Norton ignoring policy

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2002

In an editorial today, The New York Times criticizes Secretary of Interior Gale Norton for scuttling long-standing national policy to curry favor with local interests.

The paper cites Norton's moves to allow off-road vehicles on federal lands and national parks as evidence. "Giving local communities — or political leaders — what they want is not a sound basis for rational policy on the federal estate," the paper writes.

The paper says limiting off-road vehicles dates back to the Nixon administration.
