MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2001

The tribal governments for the Alaska Native villages of Craig and Kasaan have formed a technology firm to tap the lucrative market of government contracting.

The company, POW TEC (Prince of Wales Tribal Enterprise Consortium), aims to provide computer services to the government. The company will also provide computer training for local residents, funded by a $600,000 rural development grant that is paying for computers and a satellite connection to the Internet.

Providing information technology services can bring millions to tribal ventures. Alaska Native corporations and tribal governments have won a number of million-dollar contracts recently.
