FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2002

The FCC will be refunding a billion dollar investment to three Alaska Native corporations for a failed wireless deal, InfoWorld Daily News reports.

Alaska Native Wireless, owned by Sealaska Corp., Doyon Ltd., Arctic Slope Regional Corp. and AT&T Wireless, purchased $2.9 billion for the wireless licenses but an appeals court last yearsaid they still belong to a bankrupt company called NextWave. A settlement that would have allowed the auction purchasers, including the Native venture, to keep the licenses was not acted upon by Congress.

The corporations then asked the FCC for a refund, but a final decision has not been made, said a spokesperson. Formal notification of the refund could have come as early as yesterday, InfoWorld reported.
