Census 2000 Profile: South Dakota
MARCH 12, 2001

A profile of South Dakota and its American Indian / Alaska Native population.

American Indians in South Dakota are the second largest population in the state but lag in growth behind African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanics, according to Census Bureau figures released on Friday.

The American Indian population grew at least 23 percent from 1990 to 2000. The Asian-American population, on the other hand, grew at least 49 percent during the same time period.

Still, South Dakota is third when ranked by American Indian percentage of the population. Some 8.3 percent of the state consider themselves American Indian or Alaska Native, ranking behind only Alaska and New Mexico.

Although a large number live off-reservation , most American Indians in South Dakota (66%) live on reservations or trust lands. Some 11 reservations are located in full or in part in the state.

For the first time, the Census 2000 allowed respondents to identify multiple racial heritages. Most South Dakotans (98.7%) identified themselves as only one race, although some (5,181) considered themselves both American Indian and White, the largest of any multiple heritage grouping in the state.

The American Indian population is also very young. Some 44 percent of American Indians in South Dakota are 18 years of age or less.
