MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2002 A memorial service was held on Saturday for Lloyd Kiva New, the influential artist, educator and founder of the Institute of American Indian Arts. The ceremony was held at the school's campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Eulogizers included including former New Mexico Congressman and Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, whose family has been a patron of Native arts, and Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday. New was a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and served as a naval officer at the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Get the Story:
