Senate approves education bill

JUNE 15, 2001 The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved an education bill to reform the nation's public school system, a top priority of President Bush. By a vote of 91 to 8, the Senate approved a similar bill that the House passed last month. The bill requires mandatory annual testing of students in reading and mathematics: schools that don't meet requirements would face loss of federal funds if they don't show improvement. The bill doesn't include a school voucher program, which Bush supports. Get the Story:
