SEPTEMBER 5, 2000

A sculpture representing Pope, the San Juan Pueblo man who led the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, will represent the state of New Mexico in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, DC.

A commission chaired by Governor Gary Johnson and Herman Agoyo of San Juan Pueblo will choose which of four models will represent the leader.

In 1997, Agoyo helped pass a law honoring Pope with a statue in the hall.

"To the pueblo people, he's our hero," Agoyo told The Santa Fe New Mexican.
