School takes stand on mascots

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2002 Schools belonging to the National Collegiate Athletic Association are being urged by the president of St. Cloud State University in Minnesota to oppose the use of Indians as mascots, symbols and themes. Roy Saigo will urge the schools during a speech this Sunday on the issue. Saigo has asked the NCAA to approve a resolution condemning the use of mascots, which is expected to be further acted upon this fall. The school has opposed the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota. The two schools compete in sporting events. Get the Story:
