Members of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico are working with the University of New Mexico to create a dictionary of their language.

A $226,000 National Science Foundation grant is funding the project. The grant ends in 2004, the target date for the final dictionary.

Only a third of the 3,000-member tribe are estimated to speak the language fluently.
