DECEMBER 4, 2000

The delay over the outcome of the Presidential race is casuing some to wonder what will happen to the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge.

Environmentalists hope President Bill Clinton declares the refuge a national monument before he leaves office. But if he does so, Congress may react negatively. Some members of Alaska's delegation, including Republican Senator Frank Murkowski, support drilling.

Texas Governor George W. Bush said he supports oil drilling in the refuge, while Vice President Al Gore opposes it.
