Tribal-environmental summit in Maine
JANUARY 24, 2001

Maine tribal leaders and an environmental group are meeting in Portland today to discuss the health of the state's rivers.

Tribes have been concerned about the quality of water in the state and how it has affected wildlife. They will meet with Maine Rivers, a state coalition who is working to protect and restore rivers.

Three tribes are also involved in a dispute with private paper companies over water quality near their reservations. The tribes want the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor water quality while the state wants to control it.
