Utah legislators on Wedesday approved a ban on high-level nuclear waste in the state.

The ban is an attempt to prevent Private Fuel Storage (PFS), a consortium of eight private utilities, from constructing a nuclear storage facility on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation. In addition to banning waste, it taxes heavily any businesses who do business with PFS and prohibits counties from providing services to it.

PFS says the federal government has authority and if it approves the project, nothing can prevent it from going through.

A separate bill was passed to tax low-level nuclear waste.
