The Hanford Reach National Monument, declared by President Clinton in June 2000, has the potential for natural gas development, according to a US Geological Survey report.

The monument is also being targeted for potential boundary changes, mining, or other uses by Secretary of Interior Gale Norton. On Wednesday, she sent a letter to state, local, and tribal leaders and asked if they had any suggestions for changes to the national monuments created in the last two years of the Clinton administration.

The report was commissioned by the Republican members of the House Committee on Resources.
