APRIL 2, 2001

The Department of Interior's Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance has written a letter to the National Surface Transportation Board, expressing its opposition to the expansion of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad.

The office says its supports the "no action alternative," or no action, identified by the NTSB's environmental impact study. The Bureau of Reclamation, another agency of the Interior, also supports no expansion.

A broad coalition of Indians and non-Indians are also opposing the expansion.
