Water use upheld for tribes salmon

A federal judge in Oregon on Monday denied a request made by non-Indians to halt a Bureau of Reclamation decision that protects runs of fish considered essential to two California tribes.

The Klamath Water Users Association and others wanted irrigation flows restored after the BOR said it would allocate almost all of the water in the Klamath Basin for fish preservation. The Yurok Tribe and the Hoopa Valley Tribe consider the fish vital but lack of water has dwindled the fish population.

The Association recently won a Supreme Court case to force the Department of Interior to make public a number of documents affecting water usage by tribes in the Klamath Basin.
