Zuni Pueblo battling coal mine

JUNE 11, 2001 Zuni Pueblo officials in New Mexico are opposing state and federal permits which will allow an Arizona company to start mining for coal near a sacred lake. The tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs say the mine will harm the Zuni Salt Lake, about 12 miles from the mine and located on tribal land. The tribe also says the mine operation will disturb historic trails. The Office of Surface Mining, an agency of the Department of Interior, is expected to approve a permit for the mine this summer. The state of New Mexico already approved a permit five years ago. The mine would start operation by the end of 2005. Get the Story:
