JUNE 22, 2001 Zuni Pueblo officials are continuing their fight against a coal mine an Arizona company wants to operate 10 miles from a sacred lake in New Mexico. The tribe believes the mine will deplete the water in the shallow lake, which has been used for centuries by a number of tribes. Residents from nearby Quemado are also concerned about the water level. The mine is proposed by the Salt River Project who wants to use the coal to provide power to consumers in Phoenix. Public hearings on the issue will be held tonight and tomorrow. The state Mining and Minerals Division has approved the plan while the Department of Interior is still considering it. Get the Story:
