The Senate on Wednesday voted 57 to 42 to ban new mining and oil and gas development in national monuments. A similar measure passed the House last month.

While no specific plans have been put in place, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton has asked tribal, local and state leaders to suggest changes to the uses of national monuments declared in the final two years of the Clinton administration. Drilling beyond what has already been approved could end up being permitted.

At the request of Republican lawmakers, the Interior also conducted an assessment of the monuments and found that some contained viable natural resources.

The House has also banned development in the Great Lakes.
