WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2001

The Department of Energy on Tuesday released a preliminary report declaring the Yucca Mountain site safe as a national repository for nuclear waste.

The site is opposed by a number of Nevada lawmakers and officials. Tribes in the area also oppose the storage of highly radioactive waste there because it would sits on traditional land.

The DOE will be holding a series of public meetings in Nevada to discuss the site. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham could recommend by the end of the year to go forward with the Yucca project.

Public comments are being accepted on the site until September 20.
