ANWR ads target lawmakers

TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2001

New radio and print ads are targeting lawmakers who voted to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, hoping to sway the Senate against doing the same.

The ads are running in 23 states. They criticize lawmakers who supported a House bill that opens up 2,000 acres of the refuge to oil and gas develoment.

They also praise lawmakers who voted against the bill.

The Senate is expected to take up its own version of an energy bill next month. A bill sponsored Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) does not allow drilling while a bill being pushed by Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) does.
