Energy bill is pay-out to industry

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001 Charges that President Bush is too corporate and industry friendly may be overshadowed by provisions in a comprehensive energy bill the House passed this week. In addition to opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, the bill contains $33.5 billion in tax breaks for the coal, oil and gas industry. Bush had asked for just a third of that amount in his various requests. Not that the White House is complaining. A spokesperson told The Washington Post the President was "pleased" with the bill's passage. Get the Story:
