Mine near sacred lake raises concern

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2001

Zuni Pueblo is prepared to file suit against the Department of Interior over a mine proposed near a lake considered sacred to a number of tribes in New Mexico and Arizona.

The Salt River Project has received a permit from the state of New Mexico to operate a coal mine near the Zuni Salt Lake. But the tribe fears the mine operation will deplete the lake of water.

SRP says it won't cede to the Pueblo's request not to pump water from the local aquifer. The company is willing to set up monitoring wells.
